About The Session:

Core Skills is a 2-day, 4-part series of intensive review and practice of the Steps and Stages of the EFT model that are required in order to become a Certified EFT Therapist.

Core Skills is the second training in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (“EFT”) that is required for EFT Certification. Core Skills is divided into four separate weekend trainings spread out throughout the year. The four modules (CS #1-#4), are designed to provide a more comprehensive understanding of and proficiency in applying the different stages and steps of the EFT model.

CS #1 focuses on Steps 1 and 2 (Assessment).
CS #2 focuses on Steps 3 and 4 (Cycle De-escalation).
CS #3 focuses on Steps 5, 6, and 7 (Withdrawer Re-engagement).
CS #4 focuses on Steps 8 and 9 (Consolidation).

You must have completed a 4-day Externship to enroll in Core Skills.

Learning Objectives:
• Create a strong alliance with both partners in a couple.
• Conduct attachment histories and therapy contracts.
• Detect coping strategies adopted by couples in times of relational distress.
• Complete Assessment and identify contraindications to EFT therapy.
• Identify triggers that threaten the attachment bond between partners.
• Define relational styles and attachment dynamics in a couple’s relationship.
• Identify a reactive cycle that negatively affects a couple’s relationship.
• Extrapolate the negative cycle from the couple’s conflict narrative.
• Define the negative cycle as a recursive negative feedback loop that has circular causality
• Differentiate between vulnerable (primary) and reactive (secondary) emotions.
• Identify vulnerable emotions underlying reactive feelings and behaviors.
• Utilize EFT interventions to access vulnerable emotions.
• Extrapolate “handles/doorways” to deepen emotion during sessions.
• Demonstrate the ability to deepen emotion using the Deepening Ladder technique.
• Name the Basic Moves of the EFT Tango.
• Trace the couple’s negative cycle including both reactive and vulnerable emotions.
• Execute all 5 moves of the EFT Tango.
• Create safe and secure bonding events for partners in a couple.
• Utilize EFT interventions to access vulnerable emotions in session.
• Apply RISSSC EFT communications skills when addressing clients in sessions.
• List therapist checklist for moving clients into a granular experience of vulnerability.
• Demonstrate ability to maintain clients in profound vulnerability.
• Identify the client’s attachment fears.
• Specify the client’s needs required to assuage attachment fears.
• Evaluate the client’s ability to share attachment fears and needs with a partner.
• Discuss any resistance by the partner to the client’s spoken fears and needs.
• Create a new narrative for the couple’s secure attachment bond.
• Utilize EFT interventions to access vulnerable emotions in session.
• Apply RISSSC EFT communications skills when addressing clients in sessions.
• List therapist checklist for moving clients into a granular experience of vulnerability.
• Demonstrate ability to maintain clients in profound vulnerability.
• Identify the client’s attachment fears.
• Specify the client’s needs required to assuage attachment fears.
• Evaluate the client’s ability to share attachment fears and needs with the partner.

Instructor Credentials:

Joe X. Cantu, MA MFT is a Certified Emotionally Focused Couples Therapist, Supervisor, and Trainer. Joe currently resides in Austin. He received his Master of Arts in Psychology from Antioch University in Los Angeles and a BFA from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX. Joe is the founder of the Austin Center for EFT, the North Texas EFT Community, and the San Antonio Community.

Joe received his clinical training at The Maple Counseling Center in Beverly Hills, CA, and worked with the Cedars-Sinai Psychological Trauma Center providing group and individual therapy to elementary school children who suffered or had been exposed to severe trauma. Joe currently maintains two practices, one in Austin and one in San Antonio, TX. Joe is English/Spanish bilingual and supervises EFT therapists in the United States and throughout the Spanish-speaking world.
